Statement of the Georgian National Platform on the Decision of the Ruling Party to Cancel the April 19 Agreement

The Georgian National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum expresses indignation at the decision taken by the ruling party to cancel the April 19 agreement reached through the efforts of international partners.

Full implementation of this agreement is essential for the democratic development of Georgia as well as for overcoming the political crisis and polarization. Withdrawal from the agreement is a destructive step including destabilization and civil unrest threats in the country, strengthens the Russian vector and at the same time contradicts the spirit of the Georgian Constitution.

The actions undertaken by the Georgian authorities actually undermined the efforts of Charles Michel, President of the European Council, through which the dangerous political crisis was overcome in the country. It has also severely shaken our Western partners’ confidence, which will jeopardize the support to be provided by strategic partners, including significant financial assistance.

The step taken by the ruling party hinders democratic processes and effective implementation of electoral and judicial system reforms. The agreement requires the inclusive implementation of reforms, which involves many political actors.

We call on all parties to acknowledge their political responsibility, urge the ruling party to rejoin the April 19 agreement and other political forces to join the political document.
